Format Wars...

Anyone who has talked technology with me in the last month, will not have been shocked by the delay of the Euro launch of the PS3 as I have been predicting it.
Just reading a couple of news sites made it perfectly clear that Sony was way behind in building the PS3 and wouldn't have enough (more than 5 million units needed) for a glocal release. Even more scary is that they may only manage 1 million units for November, which would mean the US would only get 500,000 or so (demand there was predicted to be 10 times that number).

However, does the delay mean that HD-DVD will get a head start over Blu-ray?
I had been predicting that Blu-ray would win the format war, solely on the back of the PS3.

Most consumers are smart enough to wait for the format war to settle down before buying new kit and I reckoned the Christmas rush for the PS3 and its built in Blu-ray player would result in a big enough market share to kill HD-DVD pretty quickly.

Even more weird is the concept that Blu-ray will win in Japan and the US, but Europe and Oz will pick HD-DVD. Not a problem for film distributors, as their content is localised anyway, but hardware manufacturers won't like it. In the end I expect that Blu-ray would be forced upon us by the Japan/US technology market.

Anyway, Sony has fumbled the ball and it remains to see if this could be their undoing.

Um! Dunno mate. Honestly.

It'll make interesting viewing (no pun intended), but I have no idea how it'll play out...

Ummm, what the hell is Blu-ray? lol.

(Sorry, not interested enough to read up on these things!)

Don't worry James! You don't need to know until you hit your mid-life crisis!

As an aside - IBM's new supercomputer is a con... if you read the article it is just a big PS3!

Speaking of formats - I have to say I'm really liking elements of your new layout.

I'm still not sure about the red/black thingy, but do love the little graphics which look impressive.

How did you do it? - anything fancy?

If I have time this weekend I am going to rewrite the style sheet.

I am cutting down header size.
Removing the Popcorn to give me more width.
Reverting to White background.
Tweaking the other colours.

How I did it is a secret! No honestly! I have no idea! I am not much of an XHTML guru, so I rip off other peoples' code!

This template came from "Blogger Templates", which I then customised. (Link on RH pane above the cinema ticket)

I'm working a topsecret project, no honestly I am. And I'm currently learning how to do XHTML and CSS at the moment.

I just find the concept of CSS fantastic and understand it completely, but a little confusing to program the HTML pages without knowing what'll it look like once the CSS is applied.

Or more importantly, if I change the CSS how dramatically it affects the layout. Colours, I'm fine with but actual layout throws me completely...

I made a tweak at lunchtime....
I changed one word....
The blog went hay-wire!
The CSS file I am linking too includes the layour for Two Colums with Links etc down the Left rather than the Right.
I have demo'd that layout and like it.
Can I apply that change to my blog? Nope!

I'll persevere!

I like the 3-column approach too, but I can't think of enough things to place on either side and stuff.....Keep up the perserverance though.

What I want to do is automatically drop-cap the first word of a post, like old fashioned books. Ha-ha, that's not easy and once I've done it I might hate it....
