It's the eternal tube dilemma!
Is the women standing next to me 5 months pregnant or slightly podgy? Getting the wrong answer could be painful, but doing nothing makes you seem heartless.
Since I was standing I didn't have too much of a problem, as I just needed to not take a seat when once became available, but there have been times when I have been sat down and needed to keep my nose buried in my book, lest I catch their eye!

Is it not the case that in London if you stand up and give someone your seat everyone looks at you like you're some kind of freak!?!?
It's synonymous to making eye-contact with a stranger...
You generally find that their response would be split 50:50.
Half are relieved that you did something so they don't have to. The rest reckon you are a numpty for making eye contact!
One little old lady was brilliant on the bus the other day. Most of
the seats near the front have a sticker labelling them as priority seat for the elderly, disabled or for people with young kids.
This "LOL" got on the bus and poited at the sticker and then randomly wacked people on their legs with her cane until someone gave her a seat!
My legs were out of reach, so I survived unbruised.
That's brilliant - I hope I'm like that when I'm old - truly something to aspire too!!! :))
Sod waiting until I'm old - get me a cane and I'll start tomorrow :-)
Hmm, if a youngster like yourself tried that she would get serious verbal abuse (probably in Polish).
