Good end to a day

The only thing worse than project testing is test planning.

The combo of a cold with test planning this week had left me feeling really drained, when all of a sudden the IT guys got all their knickers in a twist over a data problem and asked me for an urgent business consult after lunch today.

Once I got to the root of the problem it all fell into place nicely and we have a working solution to develop next week, but more importantly the brainstorming has left me feeling reenergised.

What a great feeling to leave the office with on a Friday!
No amount of caffeine could give me this kind of rush!!!
I really like to be challenged by my job and it makes me remember why I turn up in the mornings!

I feel the need to write down some of my thoughts for my friends to read, without putting an essay on Facebook. Hence it is time I went back to my blog.

I had intended to write about the technical trials and tribulations of relocating Down Under and what that meant with regard to internet access, email, gaming, websites, TV, mobile phones etc... Well it turns out that I couldn’t be bothered! No idea why, since that stuff used to rock my boat!

So this is more of a general commentary on our progress so far with surviving emigrating.

We are 5 months in now and have leapt through most of the hoops you would expect, such as accommodation, schooling and jobs and I won’t say it was painless, but the outcomes have been favourable and tolerable.

What surprises me the most though is how comfortable it all feels. I am sitting here 26 floors above central Sydney with a killer commute every day. I have bought an Apple product to help pass the time. I struggle at night and weekends with substandard broadband performance, I hardly watch any Australian TV, the local sport is pretty rubbish, it’s winter time and I haven’t really had chance to make any new friends. Yet I am content and happy.

It helps that Lauren and Jocey are enjoying life down here. Lauren particularly has fitted in well to her new school and Jocey is growing up normally. They clearly miss their grandparents, whom we Skype every weekend, and Lauren talks about life in the UK occasionally, but not in a way that suggests that she misses it.

Lauren’s accent may be the death of me though! Talk about killing Queens English! I cringe every time her T’s become D’s! I am looking forward to my Mum’s response to that in November!!!!!!

We are buying a house. It is not what I expected or pre-planned in my mind before we emigrated, but it most definitely feels right. The fact that every indication is that internet connectivity at the new place will be worse than I am getting now, doesn’t change my mind! The fact that we can’t afford the dream house or the pool straight away doesn’t seem to matter either. However the plot of land is a killer... It got under my skin. There are aspects of the plot that scare me, but only in a good way. They pose problems that intrigue me, but I know that in the short term I can just pay them to go away and sort them out properly in 2-5 years time.

In reality I suspect it will be 5-10 years before the house is “finished” close to the ideas in mine and Serena’s heads, but then I don’t think we really know what all those ideas are yet! We’ll plan and build a home on the site of the current house in the next couple of years, but the landscaping, granny flat, pool, kitchen garden, stables(?), orchard, hot tub etc will all come along later once we have lived with it a bit and watched the kids grow up! All those years of watching Grand Designs on Channel 4 are coming back to haunt me!

So where does that leave me? Well at the moment I have 3 things on my mind.

1/ Work is turning a bit dull as we move into the Test Phase of the project... Still it will all be over by November and the pay is good.

2/ Money! It was all OK before we decided to buy the house. Now it has been stressing me out a little as the costs associated with the mortgage etc are currently unknown numbers. They’ll firm up in the next few weeks, but for now they are bugging me!

3/ Level 80! My World of Warcraft Paladin made it to Level 65 last night. I can smell Level 80 now, and I don’t know why, but I am really enjoying levelling up a character for the first time in years! It had all become such a grind, but the end game is in my sites and I really want to get another character there.

So when / what will I blog next? Who knows?

First step on the road to sanity is restored...
TV so far is rubbish though!

Still the beach was nice today and the temperature is forecast to sit at 28°C for the rest of the week.

Just bought £10 worth of Skype Credit and phoned my Mum to wish her a Happy Mother's Day. She was chuffed, as was I at the minuscule price and tiny amount of data that it took. I then spent 10 minutes skyping my Dad properly to sort out his email issues after convincing him that it would be easier to do it with his computer turned on. Some things never change!

How good a film is Transformers!

Serena and I watched it last night on BluRay and we were both shocked as to how good it was.

The effects of course dominate, but do not feel overdone or out of place.

Neither Serena nor I knew much about the plot (despite my Kids cartoon background) and we felt that the pacing of the plot and the characters were excellent.

I think the biggest thing that surprised us though was the amount of humour that was in the film. We were expecting a gritty action-fest, but this really was aimed at kids as well, and hence humour was used very well to lower the tension.

A big thumbs up for Michael Bay!

Life has been so hectic recently I think I blogged about something only to find I didn't!

Anyway, I just want to add something extra to my post "Slipping..." below.

The best thing for me about Mamma Mia is that it "De-Gays" Abba, bringing it back to being acceptable. I was pleased to see that the 16 year old lad on X-Factor also admitted that Abba was his favourite group and was happy to sing one of their songs.

All in all, I hope this allows me to dispute Gareth's comment on my last post!

Slipping...

I have been trying hard recently to not allow my terrible taste in music to dominate my life.

e.g. I have not been watching the X-Factor at all. I have not been listening to Abba, Meatloaf, Kylie or Britney in the car!!!

However this last week has seen me slipping back to form...

1/ Mamma Mia! Oh Boy! I can't help myself! It has been watched twice since Tuesday (the second time with the Sing Along Lyrics on screen)!!!!!!!!!!!!

2/ I recorded the X-Factor results show last night just to watch Britney. Very disappointing! Plus her arse was definitely too large for those shorts - not pretty!

Dungeons and Dragons

Two words that are so emotive, and generally (in my experience) give such a negative connotation to something brilliant.

Well DND is continuing to evolve. We have had some terrible films; a pretty average MMORPG version; some excellent PC Games (Neverwinter Nights and Baldur's Gate being the pinnacles for me) and finally DND Insider.

I like the look of the dungeon builder tool (coming soon) and at $5 a month it looks a steal to me compared to something like World of Warcraft or Everquest!

Quantum of Bond

Well I have taken a good few days before sitting down to write this review of Quantum of Solace. This has been a very deliberate choice as I wanted to ruminate on the experience a bit before I rushed to any conclusions.

Now that I have you all worried, let me state that this is a good film, I am just not convinced that it ticks all the boxes as a "Bond Film".

Lets see...

Action - most definitely Yes, with the biggest BUT attached... the director and cinematographer have produced action sequences so frenetic it is all but impossible to absorb them, which results in the impressive stunts being difficult to appreciate. The pre-title sequence is heart-breaking (in it's treatment of a gorgeous DB-S), and I am certain the driving skills are magnificent, but it is over in the blink of an eye and you are left feeling "WTF just happened there?". Next we have some more free running that pales in comparison to Casino Royale's stomach churning first big chase. Skipping forward to the end we have the "usual" destruction of the Bad Guy's lair, and again the only real enemy on show is "fire".

Bad Guy - I miss Elliot Carver! Our modern Bad Guy could almost be my Boss on a bad day! Sure he is "nasty" but you never really get a sense of the motivations or madness that is driving him. In the end is just comes down to scary eyes!

Girls - We have two token Bond Girls here, of which only Gemma Arterton is true "Bond Girl" with the ridiculous name of Strawberry Fields! Not that this is a bad thing as Olga Kurylenko's character is more about plot and character than sex.

M - Dame Judi is excellent as always, although I would like to have seen her snatch up a gun at one point and shoot one of the baddies who double-crossed her!

Gadgets - None, beyond Sony product placements.

Pithy One Liners - Hmmm, if they were there (and I am sure they were), then I can't remember a single one.

In fact I think that last one summarises the film for me as a whole. There is so little memorable about it. If you had cast Matt Damon and called it "The Bourne Explosion", then I think it would have worked just as well.

Perhaps I am being harsh? Don't get me wrong in general the cast are all outstanding, with special nods going to Giancarlo Giannini reprising the role of Mathis from Casino Royale and Olga Kurylenko as the seriously damaged Camille. It is just that it didn't work for me as a Bond Film. I didn't care about the plot and I didn't really hate the Bad Guys. What I did care about was Bond, Mathis, Agent Fields, M and Camille.

Overall this is a Bond Film, but only just. It is a good follow on from Casino Royale, in as much as it ties up the loose ends and gives Bond some measure of solace (if not revenge) and will hopefully allow him to move forward, now that we have seen his character grow.

So my score.... I think 6/10 is fair. More "Licence to Kill" than "Goldfinger"!

Well we are back from Chicago and this is just a quick update before I try and relaunch my blog.
Lauren has had bad jet lag which has meant that Serena and I have really suffered for the last few nights. Finally she seems to be back in her routine as she slept through last night. Hopefully we will be able to catch up on some sleep now!
Chicago was great fun and I have to say that it is now my favourite place in the USA!
I took a few photos that evoked film memories! A quiz will follow once I tidy them up!
Beyond that I am back at work and the push to Christmas has begun and I am trying to reverse my holiday weight gain.
Next thing to look forward to is 31 Oct, but that will be a separate post!

I have a T-Shirt similar to this and after Yesterday's debacle it suited my mood, so I stuck it on this morning as I headed out the door taking the girls to nursery.

Once that job was done I popped to Richmond Sainsburys to pick up some groceries and found that they were filming a commercial. Anyway I whizzed round grabbing my bits and bobs and was suddenly greeted with a "CUT! I don't think Mr Grumpy is quite what Sainsburys are looking to advertise as a typical customer!". I had accidentally walked through shot as one of the "assistants" hadn't been paying attention.

I had to smile as I scurried off again!

We've been burgled! (Last night!)

2 wallets and my BlackBerry nicked and then they probably legged it as both Jocey and Serena's Mum were up and about a lot in the night, so they decided it was too risky.

The big question is how the #### did they get in?

I reckoned our front door was pretty secure but somehow they have removed the chain, undone a dead-lock and then slipped the Yale.

The door was securely locked at midnight (I checked) and then wasn't at 6.30 am when I came downstairs.

They clearly left that way, but if they got in another way I am stumped to know how!!!

New BlackBerry coming tomorrow, and replacement credit/debit cards coming in 5-7 days. Hopefully my replacement driving licence will come before the trip to the USA as well, or else I won't be driving!

Well, OK, I am not quite crying, but it is really frustrating when I am waiting for loads of other people to complete pieces of work so I can push on and finish what I need to do.

I have surfed all my regular sites.

The other stuff I would like to surf is blocked by "Websense".

We get a rubbish signal here, so I can't even surreptitiously surf on my BlackBerry!

So what is left. I could blog about all those things I wanted to blog about and forgot to do at the time... But I have forgotten why most of them were funny / annoying etc.

Darkest Night

Wow, how dark is the new Batman film!

Serena and I got time out to go to the cinema at the weekend and nipped off to a matinee performance of The Dark Knight.

What a different film. I almost feel like I didn't enjoy it as it is so bleak!

Visually the film is stunning and the audio also rocked our socks off (if anything the cinema had turned it up to 11)!

I can't really fault a single actor either, but for me Aaron Eckhart stood out as Harvey Dent.

A lot of media had been produced around Heather Ledger's performance as The Joker, and I admit it was scarily out of character for him, and an extremely believable performance of a psychopath, however I don't know if it warrants an Oscar. But then did Anthony Hopkins deserve a Best Actor nod for Silence of the Lambs? (Best Supporting Actor maybe?)

Anyway, the film scores 8/10 from me, but if you do go along don't expect to leave the cinema in an upbeat mood!

On Thursday night I was nearly home with the girls in the back of my car when a Van failed to stop at a Give Way sign and did this:

Incident #2:

Resigning myself to car sharing with Serena until we get a new car, we headed out to work on Friday morning only to find that Serena had a flat tyre! It took me 10 minutes to change it (according to Serena - I wasn't timing it) and I then got everyone else at School / Work before heading to Kwik Fit.

Well Serena finally caved in and allowed me to buy a Nintendo Wii.

But how do you get the scarcest commodity on the planet without selling a kidney? I am talking about Wii Fit.!

Nowhere in the UK has them at RRP (and I am not paying £150).

I have ordered one from Amazon.de (95 Euros) with an estimated shipping time of 1 month, but if I find one more locally then I can always cancel.

I resisted the urge to go mad on games for now... I will content myself with Lego Indy and Wii Play (Wii Sports came free).

Whilst we are on the sensitive topics I would like to announce that I have solved one of the age old mysteries...

"Why do Men leave the toilet seat up?"

Women assume that this is pure laziness. Actually it is very good manner!

Men are generally a bit less dignified on the loo than our female counterparts, which means things can get messy, especially after some macho-curry-eating session! There is nothing more terrifying than walking into a gents public loo and opening the cubicle and finding the toilet lid down! Who knows what mess has been left behind my an underpowered flush? To find out you are going to have to get really close to lift the lid! Which is surely unhygienic in its own right?

However if the seat had been left up we would see at a glance whether it was safe to approach or not - pure courtesy!

This could get messy so don't read on if you are slightly squeamish!

I am bemused about the design of some pharmaceutical products.

I was a bit under the weather last weekend which resulted in me being constipated. I eventually had a "break through" but it left my bum more than a bit sore.

Being a man I worked through the pain (so to speak) but it hasn't gone away and I finally resigned myself to going to Boots for some sort of remedy.

I found an ointment and a spray, and also being a man decided to buy both "just in case".

Now the ointment I can figure out for myself. You put some on your finger and then stick your finger where it hurts. So why include an optional long nozzle? I am not likely to stick the tube up my bum just to get the cream to the area that is sore - that would seem like a path leading to "over-dispensing".

Now we turn to the spray. Here I was expecting something that allowed fine control, but no - what you get is a small pump-action bottle akin to an old fashioned breath freshener. How does that help me. I would need a mirror and a third hand just to get close to spraying in the right direction! A better design would be surely something like a Sinex nose spray. Then at least you are fairly confident that your are spraying in the right direction!

Sigh!

I discovered this on Monday! After 2 days of torrential rain!

Any suggestions how to dry out a driver's and passenger's seat? I am commuting using a towel to keep myself dry!!!!

I am saddened that Russell T Davies has decided to step down from helming Doctor Who for Season 5. He has done a sterling job and he will be missed.

However replacing him will be Steven Moffat writer of Coupling, The Empty Child, The Girl in the Fireplace and the BAFTA winning Blink. Clearly there is a God! If I could have picked one person to take over it would have been Steve!

So T-Mobile made me an offer for 2 new Blackberries and were prepared to throw in a PS3 and a Wii.

I phoned up Orange to get my PAC codes and they made me a counter offer...

No fancy freebies but similar minutes, texts, email and data to T-Mobile at about 2/3 of the monthly price; the WiFi versions of the phones instead of the GPS versions, and across the two contracts, £180 of cash-back.

When you compare the two contracts over 18 months, the Orange one comes out £630 cheaper but doesn't give you the two consoles. The two consoles have a street price of under £500 so this is a no-brainer for me and Serena. We stay with Orange and buy the Wii soon and the PS3 a bit later.

Oh and we have to wait until 22 May for the new phones as that is when our current contract ends. Big deal!

Bright Idea?

I really want both a PS3 and a Nintendo Wii.

Now clearly at the moment I don't have hundreds of pounds to throw around and so this is pretty much a pipe dream.

Then I had a dawning realisation...

May 2008 is Mobile Phone Contract renewal time for both Serena and I. I am no longer precious about changing my number (although Serena might be), so I reckon I will go for a good deal and worry about the number afterwards.

I had intended to go direct to Orange like always, but looking around I can get a better deal from the likes of The Link or Carphone Warehouse AND I can choose a free PS3 or Wii. Since I have 2 phone contracts to upgrade I reckon that means I could get both!

I need to check the fine print, but I see the start of a beautiful friendship coming! (Although I may not get the phone I really want - Blackberry - with the deal).

The new Media Centre PC currently has an old Heat Sink on the CPU as the silent one I bought broke when I tried to install it.

Serena emailed Zalman direct on Sunday morning about the broken clip and one arrive in the post yesterday morning, no questions asked.

Now that is good customer service in my books!

Well the replacement parts for my dead PC finally came on Saturday.
After much annoyance I have finally got the system up and running in a Media Centre style case, which will be desk bound until we can afford a decent 2nd PC, allowing this one to move under the telly.
The end count for my damage of the other week was:
Processor - DEAD
Motherboard - DEAD
1 of 2 RAM modules - DEAD
Wireless LAN Card - Seems DEAD
Soundblaster Audigy 2 Card - Also Seems DEAD
Hard Disks - Survived
Important Data - 100% Recovered
PSU - Survived (but obsolete)

So all in all I well and truly stuffed it! Ho Hum!

This does mean that we now have 4 PCs up and running again! Since I only have space for 2 monitors and a laptop, I have two machines driving off the dual inputs on one of the monitors... I just wish you didn't have to go through 3 menus to switch between inputs!

Lauren's horse placed 3rd and Serena's came in 4th which meant that for the £120 bet I got back £87.50.
I am well gutted as my horse was looking good until it fell about 4 fences from home.
Jocey's horse finished 12th and neither of my two longshots made it beyond the fifth fence!
Still I am up if you count back over recent years! All good fun!

Grand National Day

Those that know me well will know that I always like to have a flutter on the Grand National. Due to my addictive personality I generally won't bet at other times as I don't want to get myself into a mess, but once a year I allow myself a bit of fun!

I can't say that I have a particular formula or method, other than picking some horses based on their colours, some based on their name and usually one based on my reading of the form.

Past experience has shown that I usually do better with the former two methods rather than the latter!

This year I'll pick one horse for each of my girls (although I may let Serena and Lauren choose their own) and a then two others one based on form and one with odds or 50-1 or more.

I always bet each way so you get more chance of getting your money back if one horse places. e.g. A £10 each way bet (costs £20). If the odds are 50-1 then you can get three possible outcomes:

Horse Wins = £10 x 50 + £10 x 50/4 + £20 = £645. (£10 at full odds, £10 at quarter odds and return of full stake)

Horse comes 2nd, 3rd or 4th = £10 x 50/4 + £10 = £135. (£10 at quarter odds and return of half stake)

Horse does not come in top 4 = £0. (Nothing)

Once the bets are laid I'll write them up here.

Once again I am off to the seaside for some training.

This time it is Brighton and I am only there for 2 days and the training course is titled "The Meaning of Life"! I expect them to teach me to suck eggs (compulsory course), but it is two days away from my "real job"!

I am spending one night at The Grand, which some of you may remember from a certain incident in 1984.

Hopefully there is no-one controversial staying tomorrow night!

I can't claim that it worked first time, but after a Bios update, Windows finally recognised the fact that my motherboard had onboard sound and installed drivers for it.

I have installed all the essentials and even managed to install EQ2 and Crysis (the true essentials!).

EQ2 looks a bit better (it's an old game that can only be taken so far) but Crysis is playable (as opposed to a laggy slideshow) and looks gorgeous.

I'll try and work out some screenies.

Oh and the biggest success...

My new slipstreamed install disk for Windows XP.

My install disk is pre-SP1 and needs SATA drivers to be installed from a floppy drive (which the new PC doesn't have).

Using nLite, Nero and a lot of help from Paul Thurrott's excellent website, I made a Windows XP SP2 disk, which included the SATA drivers. Next time I'll try and incorporate all the MoBo drivers and make it unattended as well.

Serena's birthday present came today...

It's a new PC to replace her Athlon XP 2800, which we have had for nearly 6 years!

I always feel nervous when building and installing a new machine, and am hoping that the technology gods have been appeased by the offering of my older machine as a sacrifice!

Rather than build one we bought direct from CyberPower as their systems get excellent reviews and we cannot beat them on price either!

Anyway, as I write this the system is currently installing Windoze!

My little repair shop man has tested everything that he can and has given me a two possibilities....

Either I have killed the processor - 80%

Or I have done something really odd to the Motherboard - 10%

Or Both - 10%

This means that my hopes that I had just blown the PSU are of no avail.

A replacement processor is about £25 on EBay, and the motherboard would make it a write-off and I don't think second hand ones are worth the hassle.

Budget will not allow me to spend £800-900 on a new system so I have to try the EBay route first.

I won't go into specifics, but the end results was sparks and alarms (from the PC) and finally a PC that won't boot.

Well my replacement video card finally arrived from Germany and the Dyson man repaired our vacuum cleaner for free, as it took him seconds and the cause of the loss of power was not our fault (his words).

I normally get a bit depressed at this time of year and always wrote it off to SAD and I was going to blog to say that thankfully this year I seemed to have been spared, but it looks now that Serena is really down.

I am certain this is down to living with two sick kids and having money pour between our fingers for a month, rather than anything seasonal, but still I hope Lauren being back at nursery and a bit more good luck will improve things!

If not I will need to buy more Green and Blacks chocolate!

My car suffers from a blow-out whilst I am driving the girls to nursery.
Jason's PC's graphics card dies and the replacement has taken over two weeks to be delivered (still waiting).

Jocey catches chicken pox.
The tumble-dryer stops drying.
And finally, the hot water pipe that supplies the washing machine decides to supply the kitchen floor at the same time.

We are nearly £1,000 worse off than we were at the start of the month and neither of us has had a decent night's sleep in far too long.

Format Wars...
Anyone who has talked technology with me in the last month, will not have been shocked by the delay of the Euro launch of the PS3 as I have been predicting it.
Just reading a couple of news sites made it perfectly clear that Sony was way behind in building the PS3 and wouldn't have enough (more than 5 million units needed) for a glocal release. Even more scary is that they may only manage 1 million units for November, which would mean the US would only get 500,000 or so (demand there was predicted to be 10 times that number).
However, does the delay mean that HD-DVD will get a head start over Blu-ray?
I had been predicting that Blu-ray would win the format war, solely on the back of the PS3.
Most consumers are smart enough to wait for the format war to settle down before buying new kit and I reckoned the Christmas rush for the PS3 and its built in Blu-ray player would result in a big enough market share to kill HD-DVD pretty quickly.
Even more weird is the concept that Blu-ray will win in Japan and the US, but Europe and Oz will pick HD-DVD. Not a problem for film distributors, as their content is localised anyway, but hardware manufacturers won't like it. In the end I expect that Blu-ray would be forced upon us by the Japan/US technology market.
Anyway, Sony has fumbled the ball and it remains to see if this could be their undoing.

Way back I postulated that Blu-Ray would eventually win the HD format wars, based solely on the integration with the PS3.

Looks like I was right as Toshiba (the main HD-DVD technology producer) has decided to pull out of that format following the mass evacuation of its original supporters. I'm so glad I didn't leap on that bandwagon. Especially since I would have picked HD-DVD as the superior format!!!!

We are saving money like crazy so we can build a new PC.
Gareth's PC woes have managed to infect us though, as the video card in our main PC decided to blow up on Friday night and is well and truly dead.
Since that system uses the older AGP format, getting a replacement will be neither easy nor cheap, so we may just have to wait for a couple of months for the new machine.
BUMMER!

Lessons in PC Voodoo!

I love urban myths, but I get a secret grin when I tell people some things that I know to be facts and they dismiss them as Urban Myths or me pulling their leg!

My first example is the hard disk in the freezer trick! If your PC won't boot up and you reckon this is down to a hard disk drive failure then if all things fail I suggest taking the drive out and wrapping it up in cling film or a sealed freezer bag (must be air tight) and then leaving it in the freezer for an hour. The most common cause of HDD failure is component seizure and rapid cooling can unstick a stuck drive. However the problem is very likely to recur so this only gives you about 15-30 mins of cold life during which you should back up everything you can from that disk.

My second example is very much a last resort and will only work for a self acknowledged geek. We all know that in Voodoo rituals you often require the blood of a freshly sacrificed chicken, but given that techno geeks tend to steer clear of anything fresh or bloody, I can confirm that waving frozen chicken portions over a dead PC, three times clockwise and three times anti-clockwise gives a true believer the ability to reboot a stalled system!

If you do find the two tricks above don't work for you all I can say is that (a) the hard disk is REALLY fucked or (b) your faith / geekiness is not true enough.

Be warned that this car has a sense of humour and likes to breakdown when it is most inconvenient.

Example 1: I am in Twickenham and I have to drive to Luton Airport to fly up to Edinburgh... Car refuses to start and I end up needing a new battery and making my flight by literally seconds.

Example 2: I am at Lauren's nursery and it is dark, she is tired and wants her tea... Car won't start and ends up needing a new starter motor. Fortunately the AA gave me priority service due to Lauren's presence in the car so I was bump started home within 30 mins.

Given that Example 2 was last night, I am very glad that it is pay day today.

Annoyingly Serena and I had already decided to go car hunting this weekend and the car could have been off our hands before the repair was needed... I have a feeling that the cost of this repair is going to be a nasty shock.

Oh, yeah... How much? I'll take £1,500 for cash. I fact, I'll take £1,000 if you promise to remove it quickly!!!!

After a very busy Christmas and New Year I am looking forward to a quiet January with lots of early nights! I am very sleep deprived! I may even extend that wish into February! I also really need to think about getting back to the gym! (Maybe next week)

New Job - First Impressions

So here we are, two weeks into my new job. Time for a bit of a first impressions blog.

Wow! The commute sucks but my new job is great. Once the schools are back my drive to work will take between 60 and 90 mins and my drive home will take 80+ minutes. At the moment it is OK as the traffic is quiet in the morning and manageable in the evening.

My job title is “Senior Business Analyst”, but my role can be summed up as helping the business decide how it wants to change it’s processes and then helping to drive that change though. Most of this will be through IT projects, but it should also include process re-engineering.

I am kind of going back to my roots with this move to L&G, as it’s core business (Protection) is what I started out doing at both Standard Life and NAB.

The people here are all really friendly (even the contractors!) and whilst politics clearly play a part on the day to day machinations of the company, they don’t seem to cause too many blockages.

The building has an odd layout (being like a giant figure 8), and the loos are all in the central hub (which is annoying as I work at the top of the figure 8 and the canteen / café is at the bottom of the 8). The café does a nice cappuccino and the restaurant is reasonably priced (if not subsidised) and the food is of good quality.

Whilst I haven’t got my own laptop yet, the PCs and infrastructure seem to work well, although I am dismayed to be using Office 2000 again. Using Outlook as opposed to Lotus Notes is also a refreshing change.

The current big project is close to deployment and looks like it will work well. The majority of my time at the moment is being spent with the contractors learning about the new system so that, along with the other new starts, we can become the new business experts on the system.

I am the second new analyst to be hired in the last month, with one more joining this week and another in the New Year. I think the ultimate goal is to recruit 5 in total, so they are still one short. The team consists entirely of contractors and a permy manager, so the business is clearly looking for fresh blood to clear out the contractors. I hope we are given ample time for the “knowledge transfer”.

I also need to come up with a new feature for my Blog header as this greenfields site is completely devoid of celebrities! Suggestions on a post card!

Relief and Disaster

I checked my bank account this morning and was relieved to see my Christmas paycheck sitting there, smiling back at me. Not having a proper paycheck for 5 months has been no fun at all. Now I just need to remember my Credit Card bill and not start planning a spending spree!

I then opened my email to find out that a close friend has just been told that he will be one of the 40% of his company being laid off in January.

I'll be doing a "Review of 2007" post next week, and was trying to really be upbeat for Christmas, but news like that really kicks you in the nads. At least I got 3 months' notice from NAB and kind of saw it coming from about 3 months prior to that. I think 1 month's notice out of the blue just before Christmas is the worst thing to do to someone. It ranks up there with 1 week's notice, 2 months before someone's wife is due to give birth!

My commiserations mate. :(

VICTORY!

I'm delighted to announce that Gareth failed in his challenge to beat me at Star Wars DVD Trivial Pursuit. It was very close, but I took the title 2 rounds to 1. Gareth took his defeat like a man and issued a return challenge for the next get together. I was happy to accept.

Gillian, being uninterested in Star Wars acted as question master (doing a supreme job) and then managed to pick up Gareth's spirits by steering the Scottish team to the narrowest of victories at normal DVD Trivial Pursuit. Serena and I suffered greatly at the hands of the "Wheel of Death" on multiple occasions!

This defeat was for-ordained in a way, as Serena and I have lost before in a very similar manner to Jase and Charlotte. They have denied us access to a rematch though!

Given time there may be some Genus III action today for the ultimate in Trivial Pursuit tests.

Having been told that I am to start work on Wednesday 5th December and that I would receive the paperwork through the post I have been unable to raise my agent since. I have received no paperwork and now that I have phoned L&G's HR department they have told me that they think I am starting Monday 10th December.

Oh well, three more days of freedom!

We are alive (honest)!

So what have we been up to? Well we just came back from a week up north, where we spent a few days with my parents in York before heading to Edinburgh for Jocelyn's christening at St Giles' Cathedral. We then drove all the way back down, staying over in York on the way back.

We did the journey in two cars, so we could swap cars with Serena's parents for the return journey. I have my old red Honda Civic back and will be trading it in some time early next year for something bigger. Serena now has her Mum's Honda Jazz in trade for her Nissan Micra.

To make the journey a bit more bearable for Lauren we bought a portable DVD player on which she watched hours of Teletubbies and In The Night Garden whilst I listened to audiobooks on my MP3 player! Serena and Jocey happily listened to Classic FM in the other car. In fact Jocey was exceptionally well behaved on the drive and is turning out to be a little angel!

We are now well on with spring cleaning our whole house in preparation for Christmas, as we have a house full for both Christmas and New Year (our trip to York for New Year has been canceled and my parents are coming to us instead).

Beyond that I finally have a start date for my job at Legal and General, after they decided to carry out a full five year reference and credit check on me! That meant capturing info from our stay in Australia, so the whole process seemed to take forever. I start on Wednesday 5th December.

Both Serena and I have been really good recently as well, going to the gym, eating healthily and I have also been taking Lauren swimming (although she doesn't really like it yet). It was paying off as I had lost 10 lbs, but I suspect the unhealthy eating of the trip to our parents will have undone some of the good work.

Plans for the immediate future are finish the tidying and get the house straight before the Weegies descend upon us in a fortnight and a family lunch with Jase and Charlotte celebrating Charlotte's 30th birthday! Then it will be polishing my shoes and finally having a shave! Being on the social for so long means that my beard is rather bushy!

What Hi-Fi Show (part 1)

Serena, Lauren, Jocey and I managed to look round for a good couple of hours before the girls were bored and we got to demo pretty much all of the major TV makes and models that are out there.

Both Serena and I agree that the hands down winner was the Pioneer Kuro range.

If you are looking for a screen above 40" then the rest of the competition didn't come close!

The Orange Box

My birthday treat to myself was The Orange Box expansion for Half Life 2.

As well as including Half Life 2 and the Episodes 1 and 2 expansions for it, the key component for me was Team Fortress 2.

TF2 is an online shooter that follows on from a really old Half Life mod called Team Fortress Classic (a conversion of a Quake 2 mod called Team Fortress - surprisingly). TFC had been my favourite online shooter of choice for many years and the TF2 update for it is just as much fun.

The game play is pretty much identical and the new graphics engine is brilliant (cartoon style rather than super-realistic). and overall it makes my purchase worthwhile!

However The Orange Box had a bonus... A technology demo called Portal which had been converted into a game. The game is a "not too tough" puzzler and has only about 5 hours of game-play too it, but the work they have done to add atmosphere and a plot to the game are just brilliant. As far as freebies go there is no comparison - this one rocks!

World in Conflict

You may remember that I played the demo of World in Conflict a few months back and really liked it. Well Jase and Charlotte bought me the full version for my birthday and I have now completed it!

I have to say that it was an excellent game with the single player campaign lasting about 20 hours.

I have tried out the online play modes and am less then thrilled, as there are very few servers and those that are there are ruled by gangs of Admins who always play together and wipe the floor with newbies like myself! I'll stick to Team Fortress 2 for my online gibbage!

As Gareth pointed out in his comments below, our new monitor has a built in webcam. His suggestion that we will use this for naughty purposes in unfounded as we have had a webcam running for many months now and this integrated one is just a bonus that we should not need to use.

Serena's parents have a similar integrated webcam on their laptop and most weekends we video conference with them so they can say hello to Lauren and Jocey. Our old webcam was not behaving so we currently use one of Logitech's many excellent contributions to the PC world.

For simplicity we have configured Skype to automatically switch on the camera when we chat and this always comes as quite a shock to my friend Lawrence when we blether over Skype! I have to hit the "Stop Video" button rather sharpish!!!!

What a waste of time!

My trusty Iiyama LCD monitor died on my birthday having given us 4 years of hard earned service. I checked with Iiyama and it had run out of warranty around Easter so there wasn't much we could do - the repair cost was unlikely to be worth the hassle.

As part of my delayed plans to build a new PC I had always intended to buy a new monitor and had been eyeing up Alex's Samsung Beast since he needed my help setting it up a few months back!

However only a few days before my bereavement I had read a review of the new Viewsonic 22 inch monster and even though it worked out a few pennies more than the Samsung I decided that it was the one for us!

Well the monitor arrived on Tuesday and talk about a faff to set it up! The digital setup refused to play ball and I had to resort to an analogue connection whilst I worked out what was wrong with it.

I spent 30 minutes of the phone to Viewsonic's techies and got no help whatsoever, just a we don't know but we'll ring you back! (When?)

Anyway I ploughed on and decided to wipe down the drivers and to start afresh.

Bingo... I updated the graphic drivers and instantly everything worked fine. I then installed the monitor drivers and it all went to hell again!

Third time lucky? I uninstalled all the drivers again and reinstalled the graphics drivers and decided that Microsoft's generic "Plug and Play Monitor" driver seemed to be much more reliable than Viewsonic's own, so I left it at that!

Anyway after 2 days I am very pleased. Running games at full screen is beautiful, although it does tax this poor PC a little bit! DVDs look good and 1080P HD Trailers I downloaded as a test look amazing (apart from Beowolf which looks shit! - stupid CGI animation.).

Now I just need to get used to surfing in widescreen!

The Taxman Cometh!

About a month ago I received a letter from HM Revenue and Customs regarding the 3 months from January to April 2007. Apparently they were concerned that they had no record of me earning any money and hence didn't pay any taxes! I have to say I was touched by their concern!

They gave me a lovely form to fill in on which I detailed all the inactivity that filled those months between leaving NAB and the end of the tax year.

Anyway time rolled on and I was far too busy with Lauren and Jocey to worry about it until I received a rather long letter from the Revenue on Monday! It told me that they had reviewed my last 5 years of tax payments and had come to the following conclusions.

In 2002-03 I was mainly in Australia and didn't have to pay any tax.
In 2003-04 NAB failed to calculate my tax correctly and I owed the Revenue £60.
In 2004-05 NAB failed to calculate my tax correctly and I owed the Revenue another £55.
In 2005-06 NAB failed to calculate my tax correctly and I owed the Revenue another £60.
In 2006-07 NAB failed to calculate my tax correctly but fortunately the Revenue owed me about £500!

Hence they enclosed a cheque for the difference!

Each year was covered off by a different page of the letter and I was cacking my pants by the time I got to 2006-07! Nice to see that NAB finely managed to do something in my favour!

That little refund paid for this rather fine monitor!

I am pleased to say that Lauren is well enough today to go back to nursery, which means that Serena and I can have a rest!

Having 2 kids seemed pretty much like having 1 for many weeks, but when Lauren is ill she demands so much of your time that suddenly you cannot achieve anything during a 24 hour period!

Anyway, I have lots of things that I wanted to blog about, if I can just remember what they all are!

Hence they will be presented in a random order!!!!!!!!!!

Well the new monitor is here (it came yesterday) and it now works (the supplied drivers don't work, but the default Windows ones do) after nearly 3 hours of fiddling.

Unfortunately Lauren is not well so we have kept her home from nursery and I haven't got time to do a catchup post.

More when I can.
